NaBITA Activities Update

  • NaBITA now has more than 100 institutional members, with over 500 participating individuals from those institutions. This represents excellent growth from last year. Thank you for prioritizing NaBITA in times of tight budgets.
  • NaBITA's 2nd Annual Conference, held in December of 2010, had 210 registrants (up from 175 in 2009) and was hosted by Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana.  Thank you to NaBITA Conference Coordinator Samantha Dutill and Tulane Site Coordinator Erica Woodley for producing an amazing conference featuring Gary Pavela, Mary Ellen O'Toole and Jim Cawood, amongst many other well-received presenters.  Special thanks also go to Gene Schuster and Rebecca White for their tireless, volunteer efforts on behalf of NaBITA.  Evaluations showed this was one of the most content-rich conferences our attendees have experienced in their professional careers.  Your constructive feedback suggested less focus on extremes of violence and shooters, and more emphasis on lower-level disruptive and concerning behaviors.  Our 2011 conference will reflect these priorities as requested by you, our members.  New this year was the 1st Annual NaBITA Campus Threat Management Institute, which was capped at 35 participants and attended by 40!  NaBITA hosted a Riverboat Dinner Cruise with more than 50 participants and the Institute Faculty.  This year also marked the first official meeting of the NaBITA Board of Advisors, who are ably helping to set priorities for the future of the association.
  • At the 2010 conference, president-elect Saundra K. Schuster, Esq. took office for her 2011-2012 presidential term in a brief ceremony and welcoming statement.  Her leadership and vision are already impacting NaBITA for the better. In collaboration with Executive Director Brett Sokolow, Saunie issued a NaBITA Position Statement on the Arizona Shootings which has garnered dozens of favorable comments, calls and emails from the higher education community and beyond.  You may always contact her directly with any questions, ideas or concerns at Saundra@nabita.org.
  • Leadership Musical Chairs.  The 2010 conference also saw the transition for NaBITA past-president and founder Brett Sokolow from the presidency to a new role as volunteer Executive Director for NaBITA.  W. Scott Lewis, J.D., has assumed the position of president-elect, 2013-2014.  During his current term as president of ASCA, Scott has been on leave from his position as the NaBITA VP for Corporate and Workplace Initiatives.  In leaving that role to become president-elect, the vice president position became vacant.  NaBITA Advisory Board member Dan Timberlake, MBA, Ph.D., volunteered and has now been appointed VP for Corporate and Workplace Initiatives for 2011-2012.  Dan will continue to serve on the Advisory Board as a VP.  Similarly, Saunie's presidency left open the VP for K-12 Initiatives position she had held concurrently with being president-elect.  NaBITA Advisory Board member Brian Van Brunt, Ed.D., has graciously volunteered to fill that slot.  Thank  you and welcome Dan and Brian.
  • NaBITA produced five webinars (NaBITANARs) in 2010 which served members and non-members as well.  In a concerted effort to expand our webinar offerings, NaBITA will offer more webinars in 2011.  These events will be announced soon.
  • Membership fees are unchanged for 2011, but membership benefits have expanded, dramatically.  Based on requests from members for more team support materials, we have greatly expanded the offerings of each membership category, and will continue to do so annually.  At present, please find the following available in each membership category:

Enhanced-level members -- 127 (up from 82) protocols, sample policies, templates, training tools, articles, materials and the BIT KIT

Standard-level members -- 96 (up from 61) protocols, sample policies, templates, training tools, articles, and materials
