DESCRIPTION OF TRAINING

MERIT Active Shooter Training
October 1st from 8am-5pm

Rethink Active Shooter Training. MERIT not only teaches you how to respond in an emergency, it highlights the importance of establishing a prevention-based active shooter program at your school, concentrating on preventing the act of violence before it occurs. Past acts of violence in the K–12 environments and current strategies and policies will be reviewed to build a comprehensive active shooter program-providing techniques that will aid in reducing the risk and the anxiety/fear of staff. Participants will learn the importance of integrating behavioral intervention teams and about the risk and threat assessment processes in addition to learning approaches on effective best practices to consider during an active shooter incident.

Critical Issues in Campus Safety
October 2nd from 8am-5pm

Large-scale emergency incidents and disasters can occur anywhere on any school campus. When they do, all eyes will fall on the Campus Emergency Team. As a responsible educator, you will be critically evaluated on your preparedness and your schools’ ability to manage the crisis event. This course is designed to both refresh and train your Campus Emergency Management Team, and to give them the tools that will enable them to manage a wide variety of emergency situations. Participants will be exposed to case studies and practical exercises that will allow them to apply the principles taught in class.

All registrations for 2020 trainings include access to regularly updated electronic training materials, including the full deck of training slides.

Attendee contact information is not required at time of registration; NaBITA will reach out 7-10 days prior to the training to collect each attendee’s name, professional title, institutional affiliation, email address, and phone number. Access to materials is delivered via email to each attendee 5 days prior to the training.


FACULTY

Jeff Solomon is a nationally recognized expert and consultant in school safety who has been in law enforcement for nearly three decades. Jeffrey Solomon currently serves as Vice President of Safety Initiatives at TNG, and until recently served as Director of School Operations for K–12/University Division at D-Prep, Inc. He currently serves on the Advisory Board of the National Behavioral Intervention Team Association. Jeff has been in law enforcement for 27 years and has an extensive background in the complex field of public safety in the school environment. He is a graduate of the Senior Management Institute for Police (SMIP) at the Police Executive Research Forum, along with the LAPD’s West Point Leadership program.

Brian Van Brunt, Ed.D. is a Partner in TNG, the President of the National Behavioral Intervention Team Association (NaBITA), and a past-president of the American College Counseling Association (ACCA). He has a doctoral degree in counseling supervision and education from the University of Sarasota/Argosy and a masters degree in counseling and psychological services from Salem State University. Brian is a regular speaker for academic conferences around the world, and has presented hundreds of online training seminars and classes. These trainings have reached well over 150,000 individual staff and faculty members at colleges and universities across the country.


CERTIFICATION

To obtain a NaBITA Certificate, you will need to attend the whole event. It is our expectation that you are present for the entire duration of your training course. Please allow 14 business days following the completion of the course for your certificate to be delivered.

Lunch each day will be on your own. Ample time will be provided in the schedule for meals.

Attire
Attire is business casual with an emphasis on casual.  Room temperatures may vary; layers are encouraged.

Electrical Outlets
If you wish to use a laptop to take notes, please have your computer fully charged and consider bringing a back-up battery, as there are not enough outlets in the room for individual use. Staff will not be available on-site to provide any electrical cords or technological assistance.


ACCOMMODATIONS

Special accommodation parking is available and training facility is wheelchair accessible. An ASL interpreter is available with advance notice and request. Hosts require advance notice of any dietary restrictions. Please contact NaBITA with any accommodation request(s). Be sure to specify which training you are attending in your correspondence.


POLICY

NaBITA’s policies provide guidance on cancellations, substitutions, and credits.

 

*Please note that we are following government and health organization recommendations to make a determination for the safety of our attendees and staff closer to the event date. If social distancing regulations prevent in-person training, the course will continue on the same date and time as a virtual instructor led training.
