NABITA is pleased to announce the 2023 Case Management Summit with pre- and post-training certification courses. Our first in-person Summit will be held at Belmont University in Nashville, TN from June 26-30, 2023.

The Summit is a unique event designed to provide participants with the skills and knowledge needed to implement case management services. The summit will deliver an overview of high-impact case management practices, as well as focus on the application of case management techniques with unique populations.

This event is ideal for administrators in either a full-time case management role, or in a position where case management services are part of their overall job duties. Those working with the BIT, student conduct, academic support, disability services, and even front office customer service will benefit from this summit.

Limited time offer: Receive a complimentary recording of Window into BIT 5.0 with your registration!

From its first iteration in 2015, NABITA’s A Window into BIT has served as a valuable professional development tool for BIT practitioners. At the 2022 Annual Conference, attendees joined a panel of experts and campus practitioners as they recreated this invaluable resource in front of a live audience. The panel modeled a BIT meeting as they role-played key team roles, helping you to better understand how to develop and improve BIT meetings. If you register today, you will be one of the first audiences to view this brand-new resource!

Normally priced at $299, all attendees of the Case Management Summit will receive a complimentary recording of A Window into BIT 5.0! This pre-order will automatically be tied to your registration upon checkout. Since the recording is not yet available, it will be distributed electronically closer to the Summit.

Opening Keynote: The Links Between Oppression and Trauma in Collegiate Environments: Assessment, Intervention, and the Continuum of Care

Tuesday, June 27, 2023 | 6:00-7:30pm

Healing from traumatic incidents can involve a complicated process for students from historically marginalized communities and requires a more nuanced perspective of stakeholders, community care, and larger institutional initiatives. The process of healing from traumatic incidents is not mutually exclusive from larger forces of oppression, such as racism, genderism, sexism, heterosexism, ableism, and classism, that intersect with institutional efforts and histories. What emerges from the links between oppression and trauma can leave long-lasting effects on communities of students and fail to neutralize the damage from a broken system. Case managers hold a crucial stake in navigating multiple offices, building coalitions, attending to interpersonal and systemic efforts, and serving as the first line of support for students. As a result, case managers can benefit from nuanced perspectives in examining the effects of oppression and trauma and strengthening their knowledge of assessments that ultimately intervene in the face of traumatic incidents. Dr. Chan will discuss five approaches that call for case managers to think critically with an ethic of care, attend to cultural and social implications of traumatic stress, and highlight institutional factors that propel long-term change.

Featured Session A: Supporting Students and Ensuring Safety During and After Behavioral Health Hospitalizations

Featured Session B: Monitoring Individuals in Case Management

Wednesday, June 28, 2023 | 1:00pm-2:15pm

You’ve worked with a student for a while and their risk level is decreasing. Now you must decide to either close the case or move to a monitoring plan. In this session, NABITA staff will define a monitoring plan, outline the steps to make informed decisions about monitoring vs. closing, and demonstrate how to document each step of this process.

Featured Session C: Managing High Caseloads

Thursday, June 29, 2023 | 9:00am-10:15am

Let’s face it… many of us are receiving more referrals than we have ever received. While it may feel helpful to set a standard caseload number or ratio, it is often misleading and arbitrary. A balanced case load is much more nuanced than any ration could capture. Please join the NABITA team as they discuss considerations and strategies for case managers as they work to establish and maintain a balanced caseload.

Closing Panel: Culturally Responsive Case Management Practices

Thursday, June 29, 2023 | 4:00pm-5:00pm

A panel of experts and current practitioners in the field of case management will discuss approaches to delivering culturally responsive case management practices. The panel will be moderated by Dr. Aaron Austin who served in various executive student affairs roles, focused his doctoral research on Black Male Undergraduate Achievement, and continues to study the intersection of race with various aspects of our society. Dr. Austin will guide panelists through an exploration of practical strategies for engaging in self-reflection, accessing personal and professional development, and delivering responsive case management services that consider each student’s unique identities.

Non-Clinical Assessment of Suicide

Friday, June 30, 2023 | 9:00am-4:00pm

Equip your non-clinical BIT and case management staff to identify and assess an individual’s risk related to suicidal ideation.

Participants in this course will learn how to triage risk related to suicide using the Non-Clinical Assessment of Suicide tool (NAS). The NAS relies on research-based risk and protective factors to help non-clinical professionals triage the overall risk for suicide an individual poses. The instructors in this course will provide an overview of how to identify an individual who may be experiencing suicidal ideation, strategies for asking about suicide in a one-on-one appointment, and in-depth teaching of the NAS as a suicide assessment tool. Additionally, participants will learn how to make an effective referral to clinical mental health services and deploy appropriate interventions based on the level of risk assessed using the NAS.
