A NABITA Tip of the Week by Makenzie Schiemann, Ph.D., M.S.
Every year for the past 16 years, we have looked forward to the NABITA Annual Conference as a place where the Behavioral Intervention and CARE team community can come together, but this year, it’s more than that. For the first time, NABITA is teaming up with the Association of Title IX Administrators (ATIXA) for the 2025 ATIXA and NABITA Annual Conference, on October 14-16 in Baltimore, MD, and we couldn’t be more excited to bring you something built for real-world practitioners.
You may be navigating risk or threat assessment, supporting students in crisis, responding to conduct issues, managing compliance and policy, leading a BIT, or maybe all of the above. Wherever you sit, this conference is designed for you.
Empathy + Experience = Real Impact
At NABITA and ATIXA, our trainers, consultants, and session leaders aren’t just voices behind a podium; they’re people who have done this work on the ground, in real-time, with real lives at stake.
This isn’t theory. It’s hard-earned insight and perspective from real-world experience. This conference is truly built for practitioners. You’ll see it in the session designs, the discussions, and the approachability of our experts.
You’ll also see this commitment to professional growth in our Pre- and Post-Conference certification courses, offered by NABITA and ATIXA to bookend the event. Pre-Conference courses run October 13-14, while Post-Conference courses are scheduled for October 17-18. These sessions provide a unique opportunity to deepen your expertise and elevate your professional impact. Plus, when you register for the conference and add any certification training, you receive discounted pricing.
Live Role-Play with Real Scenarios
Our session on a Mock Behavioral Intervention Team (BIT)/CARE Team Meeting is something you won’t want to miss. We will take an actual scenario and walk you through a BIT meeting from start to finish in real-time. This year, it includes a Title IX coordinator and a Title IX issue, reflecting the joint nature of our conference.
You’ll watch as we analyze the case, assess risk, assign interventions, document concerns, and manage differing perspectives, while modeling how to stay student-centered and collaborative. It’ll be transparent, educational, and a little vulnerable. After all, that’s the best way to learn what effective intervention looks like.
Whether you’re new to a BIT or a veteran member, this session will help you sharpen your skills and see a team function in action.
A Fresh Look at the NABITA Risk Rubric
We’re also excited to offer two sessions specifically focused on Updates to the NABITA Risk Rubric, a tool that’s central to many school, district, and institutional behavioral assessment protocols.
Choose between a higher education-focused session or one for K-12 settings, as the way risk presents itself and the way you intervene looks different for youth and adolescents compared to adults. That’s why we created two versions of the rubric: one for higher education (or adults) and one for K-12 settings. We’re offering two separate sessions tailored to these groups to address age-appropriate risk assessments and intervention methods.
These sessions will guide you through the most recent revisions to the rubric, explain the rationale behind them, and provide a clear framework for applying the updated version effectively. It’s an excellent opportunity to deepen your understanding of risk and protective factors and ensure your team is calibrated and current in its approach.
The Power of the NABITA Network
There’s something else that’s hard to describe unless you’ve experienced it: the networking at an Annual Conference. Yes, we talk about building connections and community, but at our conference, it’s more than polite introductions or exchanging business cards.
Every year, we see practitioners walk away from the conference with real, working peer networks—people they can call, text, or Zoom when they’re facing a challenge. That kind of community can be a lifeline, and we intentionally cultivate it in every part of the event.
Join Us in Baltimore in October
If you’re a NABITA or ATIXA member, you’ll receive preferred pricing on conference registration, as well as on our pre- and post-conference courses.
Whether this is your first conference or your sixteenth, we hope you’ll join us for what promises to be a transformative experience for your school, your team, and yourself. It’s also an excellent opportunity to build collaboration between your BIT/CARE team and Title IX/non-discrimination team, strengthening each team individually while enhancing how they work together.
