This 20-Minutes to… Trained session explores the use of behavioral contracts and mandated counseling as institutional responses to concerning student behavior. Participants will learn how behavioral contracts are commonly structured, why they can create concerns related to due process, unequal standards, disability discrimination, and overreliance on behavior-focused requirements outside the student conduct process. The session distinguishes mandated counseling from psychoeducation. Participants will explore why psychoeducation is generally the preferred approach when an institution needs to address behavior. This session is an excellent opportunity for BIT members, student conduct professionals, student affairs leaders, and other campus administrators seeking to develop more equitable, behavior-focused, and educational responses to student concerns while avoiding unnecessary or problematic mandates for clinical treatment.
