This expert system does not predict suicide, but rather offers non-clinically trained staff a list of questions to ask an individual to help gauge their overall risk level of suicide and makes recommendations for interventions. There is no substitute for a clinically trained psychologist, licensed professional counselor, or licensed social worker conducting a clinical assessment of suicide risk. However, when there is a need for a high school, college/university, or workplace to have a non-licensed staff member conduct a preliminary assessment of suicide risk, the NAS provides a useful process in order to reduce bias, improve consistency, and establish documentation for the institution.
