20 Minutes to…Trained: Role of the Counselor on the BIT

This 20-Minutes to… Trained session explores the evolving role of counselors on Behavioral Intervention Teams (BITs) and the challenges of balancing student confidentiality with campus safety and support. NABITA experts examine several models of counselor participation—from limited consultation to more active information-sharing approaches—and discuss how informed consent, professional ethics, licensure requirements, and institutional responsibilities influence a counselor’s involvement in BIT processes.

Participants will gain insight into the benefits and limitations of different collaboration models, strategies for effective consultation, and considerations for sharing information in ways that support both student well-being and community safety.
