Responding to Dangerous, Disruptive, and Distressed Behaviors

This webinar equips participants with the knowledge and skills to recognize and respond effectively to a wide range of concerning student behaviors. Attendees will learn to distinguish between dangerous, disruptive, and distressed behaviors and identify practical strategies for each.

With a focus on real-world application, the session explores how to support students in distress through empathy, rapport-building, and active listening. It also addresses how to manage disruptive situations using conflict awareness, “I” statements, and nonverbal communication, as well as how to approach dangerous behaviors with an emphasis on safety and care.

Learn how the Behavioral Intervention Team (BIT) can collaborate with key campus stakeholders, including Student Conduct, Disability Support Services, and other support systems, to support coordinated, effective, and compassionate responses.

After completing this training, participants will be able to…

  • Identify the difference between dangerous, disruptive, and distressed behaviors and know how to respond to each.
  • Understand helpful communication skills like empathy, active listening, and calm body language to support and de-escalate students.
  • Connect students with the right campus resources by understanding how the Behavioral Intervention Team and other support offices work together.
