Previously known as the Violence Risk Assessment of the Written Word (VRAWW), this course and tool have been revised and renamed to NABITA’s Screening Tool for Risk Assessment of Narrative Data (STRAND).
Access to online communication and rising emotional health challenges have led to a significant uptick in written and narrative communication that could be perceived as aggressive and threatening. BIT/CARE and BTAM teams are often tasked with evaluating the risk level and potential for violence present in narrative content.
NABITA’s Screening Tool for Risk Assessment of Narrative Data (STRAND) is designed to comprehensively evaluate the risk of violence evident in an individual’s narrative content, including social media posts, class writings, journals, blog posts, video narratives, and more. This training certifies participants in using STRAND and is NABITA’s recommended training on the tool.
STRAND offers an objective approach by considering an individual’s escalating and mitigating factors. Used in conjunction with NABITA’s Risk Rubric, STRAND categorizes risk into four levels: mild, moderate, elevated, and critical. These levels are accompanied by guidance on intervention strategies, ensuring that teams align their responses with the assessed risk levels.
This one-day certification course provides teams with a straightforward process and practical tool for triaging concerns found in narrative content. By participating in this training, individuals will acquire the expertise to manage these situations confidently and make informed decisions based on an objective assessment.
Pre-tests, Post-test, and Verification
NABITA offers optional pre- and post-tests. Participants should complete the pre-test independently, in a closed-book format, before reviewing course materials. It establishes a baseline for comparison with the post-test and does not affect certification status.
Completing the course grants Certification. Passing the post-test provides an opportunity to earn Verification, which demonstrates comprehension of the material beyond participation alone.
Pre-tests are available from the time the event lobby opens until training begins. Post-tests are open-book, may be retaken until a passing score is achieved, and remain accessible for 90 days after the training. NABITA staff members cannot reopen tests once the access period has expired.
In this course, you will learn:
- Apply STRAND to narrative content to conduct a more standardized, research-based assessment of narrative data
- Identify the key escalating and mitigating factors used in a violence risk assessment of narrative content
- Develop appropriate interventions based on the scoring of STRAND and the accompanying Risk Rubric rating
